‘American Horror Story: My Roanoke Nightmare’ Lost Colony Theme Revealed!
The hit FX anthology series American Horror Story is taking on America’s first urban legend and the original mystery of The Lost Colony in a big way, as the Season 6 premiere tonight revealed that this year’s subtitle/theme is actually My Roanoke Nightmare, a direct reference to Roanoke Island, North Carolina!
UPDATE 9/15/16: New imagery (pictured below) released today suggests that the actual subtitle is simply Roanoke.
After photos from the set surfaced earlier this summer showing what appeared to be a colonial village setting, and what is definitely a tree with the word “CROATOAN” carved into it, many speculated that the new season would feature the local legend of The Lost Colony in some way.
Tonight’s season premiere episode took the form of a “true mystery” show in which people are interviewed about their weird or unexplained experiences that happened to them on Roanoke Island as the events told are re-enacted. Both the “real life” couple telling the story the re-enactment actors are all played by some of the show’s regular cast of actors, who often return to portray different characters each season.
American Horror Story is an anthology series that changes themes and story lines, and often time periods, which each season, always taking on a different but very basic “horror story”, starting with a haunted house in Season 1 and proceeding through an Asylum, Coven, Freak Show, and Hotel in subsequent seasons.
The show previously referenced the mystery of The Lost Colony in Season 1, as a character played by Sarah Paulson explained American Horror Story‘s version of the story of Virginia Dare, the first English child born in what would become America.
While the Outer Banks itself is not exactly mentioned in the episode, it is stated that the couple relocates to “Roanoke” in “North Carolina, right near the ocean”.
The subject of Season 6 has been shrouded in mystery and yet to be revealed prior tonight’s episode.
American Horror Story: My Roanoke Nightmare airs on Wednesdays at 10pm on FX.
