Weekend Movie Update – Dec. 13, 2013: Back In 'The Hobbit'
The Hobbit faces a fire-breathing dragon in the latest epic adventure from Middle-Earth, while Madea plays Santa in theaters this week, and Thor brings the thunder to The Pioneer.
Here’s your Outer Banks Movie Update for the weekend of December 13, 2013!
Thor: The Dark World (rated PG13) starts Friday at the historic Pioneer Theatre in Manteo, playing for one week.
The sequel reunites Chris Hemsworth (The Cabin in the Woods) as the titular hero with Natalie Portman (Black Swan) as his human love interest and the excellent Tom Hiddleston (The Avengers) as Thor’s evil brother Loki, all returning from the 2011 original film in the Asgardian franchise.
Anthony Hopkins (The Silence of the Lambs) and Rene Russo (Lethal Weapon 3) are also back as Thor’s parents, Odin and Frigga, as is Kat Dennings (Nick and Nora’s Infinite Playlist), again supplying comic relief as the best friend of Portman’s Jane.
Showtime at The Pioneer is 8pm nightly.

Headlining this week’s new releases is The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (rated PG13), which takes us back to Middle-Earth for the second chapter in Bilbo’s (Martin Freeman) ongoing quest to help the warrior dwarfs reclaim their lost homeland.
Once again directed by Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings, King Kong), Freeman is reunited with Ian McKellen (X-Men) and Richard Armitage (Captain America) from last year’s Unexpected Journey, as well as Orlando Bloom (Pirates of the Caribbean), reprising his role of the elf Legolas from the original Rings trilogy, and new addition Evangeline Lilly (Lost) as Tauriel, a character created just for the films and not based on Tolkien books.
Premiering tonight (Thursday) with a special preview screening at midnight, Smaug officially roars into theaters on Friday, playing at R/C KDH Movies 10 in Kill Devil Hills in both 3D and traditional 2D formats.
