The movie is based on Phillips’ book  “A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea”, in which he recounts offering himself as a hostage and facing a five-day standoff that only ended with a rescue by Navy SEALs. It was the first time that an American cargo ship had been hijacked in 200 years.

The production filmed scenes in Virginia Beach, Virginia for a few weeks last summer.
