Meet Elizabeth II Captain this Saturday at Festival Park

Roanoke Island Festival Parks will host its next 2nd Saturday historic presentation this weekend, featuring Robbie Putnam, captain of the park’s Elizabeth II ship replica.

Join us on Saturday, June 9, at 2 p.m. for a 2nd Saturday presentation by the Captain of the Elizabeth II, Robbie Putnam, in the Small Auditorium at Roanoke Island Festival Park.

The Elizabeth II is a 16th Century representative sailing ship whose homeport isRoanoke IslandFestivalPark, located across from the Manteo waterfront. The event is free and open to the public. 

 Captain Putnam will play video clips of the Elizabeth II under construction and under sail including a clip of its launching on November 22nd, 1983.

He will also share stories about working on the ship, for the last 19 years, and sailing her to other ports as an outreach program.  Putnam has been Captain of the Elizabeth II for eight years. . 

Sponsored by the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, 2nd Saturdays takes place at 37 State Historic Sites and museums on the second Saturday of the summer months.  The more than 100 events across the state bring together history and authentic North Carolina culture.  Each site will have its own stylized theme; and many sites will have artists and/or musicians.  For a complete schedule of events, go to www.ncculture.com.
