Meet NC's Addy Miller – The Walking Dead's First Zombie [OBXE Interview]
Born and raised in North Carolina, Addy Miller just turned 12 in January, but she has already made television history as the very first zombie on screen in the opening scene of the first episode of AMC’s hit series The Walking Dead, the record-breaking phenomenon that has brought horror to the forefront of popular culture and zombies into millions of living rooms since that episode in 2010.
If you saw the scene, you remember it.
Addy recently talked to OBX Entertainment about her experience on the biggest zombie show in history, as well as her upcoming appearance at this weekend’s Blood at the Beach horror convention in Virginia Beach and her love of the Outer Banks.

“For The Walking Dead,” Miller told us, “I had this awesome part and met these amazing people, such as Greg Nicotero (makeup artist; Evil Dead II, From Dusk Till Dawn, Scream), Frank Darabont (director; The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, The Mist), and Gale Anne Hurd (producer; The Terminator, Aliens, The Incredible Hulk). Sometimes I still can’t believe that something this wonderful has happened to me, and I need to pinch myself to make sure it’s not a dream.”
Addy says her overall experience filming on the Atlanta set of The Dead could not have been more positive.
“I enjoyed everything about The Walking Dead,” she said, “from the makeup to the costumes, and how warm the whole cast and crew were to me. I am as awed by it today as I was the day it was happening. It is, at this moment, my favorite part ever.”
While it may be her favorite, ‘Little Girl Zombie’ is far from Addy’s only part, as she has been quite busy since her film debut in The Secret Life of Bees (2008), appearing in Bad Blood: The Hatfields and McCoys with Christian Slater, a 2011 episode of Ghost Trek (below), and the upcoming Plan 9 remake, among others.
You can also currently see her in theatres nationwide as an orphan in The Three Stooges.
So what was her favorite part of The Walking Dead?
“The stunts,” says Addy, “definitely the stunts.”
Miller lives and grew up in NC’s Triangle area, and she told us that her entire family looks forward to vacationing on the Outer Banks every year.
“For as long as I can remember,” she said, “my family has always vacationed every fall at the Outer Banks. We kind of favor Avon and Ocracoke Island, but I think I have eaten at every restaurant and shopped at every shop from Corolla to Ocracoke. Kitty Hawk Kites and Howard’s Pub are my favorites!”
“I absolutely love the beaches of the Outer Banks,” she continues. “There is just something magical about driving down the road, the sound on one side and the ocean on the other. It’s like you are the only person out there, and the beaches are bare and beautiful.”
When she’s not filming, Miller donates much of her time to raising funds and awareness for the Autism Society of North Carolina. She is currently running a poster contest on her official Facebook page, where fans are asked to create a poster showing how Addy supports the Autism Society.
Designs must be submitted by this Sunday, April 22nd, and the winner’s poster will be used at upcoming public appearances for Addy, in addition to getting a special prize packet from the littlest zombie herself.
Addy will join over 40 other celebrities at the first ever Blood on the Beach Horror Convention in Virginia Beach this weekend, April 20-22.
“I just feel so lucky to be in this lineup for Blood on the Beach,” she said. “If I wasn’t in it, I would be attending. All the guests are fan favorites.”
She joins a stellar lineup of special guests also scheduled to appear, including her Walking Dead co-stars, Madison Lintz (‘Sophia’), Michael Rooker (‘Meryl Dixon’), and Norman Reedus (‘Daryl Dixon’).
Already a convention veteran, Addy told us she is especially excited for this weekend’s innaugural event in Virginia Beach.
“Going to Blood on the Beach will be a mini reunion for me,” she said. “It’s like all my favorite people from past conventions were gathered together and put under one roof. I simply can’t wait!”
