311 returned to the Outer Banks for the first time in 30 years on Friday for a concert at Roanoke Island Festival Park in Manteo, presented by VusicOBX.

A staple of 1990s era alternative rock radio, 311 was formed in 1990 in Omaha, Nebraska, featuring Nick Hexum (vocals/guitar), Chad Sexton (drums), Tim Mahoney (guitar), SA Martinez (vocals/dj), and P-Nut (bass), mixing rock, rap, reggae, and funk into their own unique, hybrid sound, and now 32 years later, the band is still kicking it live and just dropped their newest single, “You’re Gonna Get It”, in June.

This Outer Banks performance was part of the band’s summer Unity Tour, headlined by 311, with special guests Awolnation and Neon Trees.

Despite persistent rain showers throughout the evening, a lively crowd turned out for the outdoor concert at the historic Roanoke Island Festival Park in Manteo on Friday, August 9.

In their over 90-minute set, 311 played all their most popular hits, including opener “Beautiful Disaster”, as well as favorites like “All Mixed Up”, “Don’t Stay Home”, “Don’t Tread on Me”, their cover of The Cure’s “Love Song”, theirĀ  latest single “You’re Gonna Get It”, and more, closing out their two-song encore with a blistering rendition of 1995’s “Down”.

Longtime local fans may recall that 311 previously played two packed house shows at the old Atlantis Beach Club, which used to be located on the NC12 beach road in Nags Head, in 1994 and again in 1995.
