Nags Head Considering Subscription-Based Recycling Program

Posted By on June 5, 2020

The Town of Nags Head is asking its residents if they would be interested in a subscription-based curbside recycling program, after the Board of Commissioners heard numerous comments from homeowners complaining about the board’s recent decision not to renew town’s recycling contract.

The Nags Head Board of Commissioners voted on May 6 to suspend the town’s curbside recycling service due to budgetary constraints related to the COVID-19 pandemic and continued issues associated with disposal of the recyclables. Then at the board’s next meeting, on May 20, the commissioners heard from a lot of residents, through emailed public comments, who all voiced their strong opposition to ending the curbside recycling service.

As a result, the town is now researching the availability of a subscription-based curbside recycling collection service in which homeowners would contract directly with a recycling hauler to have their recyclables collected.

According to a May 28, 2020 memo to Nags Head’s Board of Commissioners from Town Manager Cliff Ogburn, the town’s previously contracted recycling provider Bay Disposal will consider a subscription-based service, but has not yet committed to offering the program. Bay Disposal has asked the town to compile a list of at least 300 potential subscribers.

The cost for the subscription service is estimated at $15-$25 per month per household, as property owners and residents would contact the town to be placed on a list. Once that minimum number of 300 subscribers is reached, the list will be provided to the vendor and they will contact each subscriber directly to create an account and establish service.

Nags Head homeowners who wish to complete the form to be placed on a list of potential subscribers for a subscription-based curbside recycling collection service, can sign up here.

The town is also seeking volunteers to join the new Nags Head Reduces, Reuses, and Recycles Committee.

The mission of the committee will be to “help Nags Head become a leader in developing progressive ideas that can enhance recycling and waste reduction efforts,” according to the town’s website.

Anyone interested in being a part of the committee is asked to complete an online form here.

Interested committee participants will be contacted in August 2020 with a goal of holding the first meeting in September 2020.
