Southern Culture on the Skids Headlines Avon Rock the Cape Festival [Concert Preview]
The Dare County Arts Council will present the first ever Rock the Cape Festival this weekend in Avon, headlined by North Carolina music icons Southern Culture on the Skids.

Rock the Cape is a kick-off-to-summer benefit for Dare County Arts Council’s program outreach on Cape Hatteras and the Community Music School. The fundraiser will celebrate life on the water’s edge and will feature local music, artists, food, drinks, a kids’ zone, and more.
North Carolina legends Southern Culture on the Skids will headline the event, along with Outer Banks bands Formula, Waterhigh, Ruth Wyand Trio, and the Dare County Arts Council’s Community School playing throughout the day.
“From the Buxton Backroad to the Avon Pier, Cape Hatteras will be rocking to the head high, down home, Hillbilly surf music of Southern Culture on the Skids! Bring your sunscreen and dancing sandals! We are gonna Rock the Cape,” said guitarist and vocalist Rick Miller from Southern Culture on the Skids.
Southern Culture on the Skids was formed in 1983 in Chapel Hill, NC.
Formed in Chapel Hill, NC in 1983, Southern Culture on the Skids have made a career of successfully carving out a unique musical genre that could be called “surfabilly punk”, but truly defies description, as does their sharp, often dark humor.
Their original music has been used in various feature films over the years, including “Soul City” in both Happy Gilmore (1996) and the Dukes of Hazzard (2005), “White Trash” in Beavis and Butt-Head Do America (1996), and “Camel Walk” in Flirting with Disaster (1996).

The band themselves appeared briefly in the 1997 slasher I Know What You Did Last Summer, which was written by New Bern native Kevin Williamson (Scream, Dawson’s Creek The Vampire Diaries) and was filmed in nearby Southport, North Carolina.
During a party scene early in the film, SCOTS is featured performing their track “My Baby’s Got the Strangest Ways”, which you can hear in the player below.
The Dare County Arts Council will host the inaugural Rock the Cape Festival on Friday, May 31, from 2 to 10pm at Koru Village’s Beach Klub in Avon.
Tickets are $12 in advance, on sale now at Koru Village, Cloud Nine, the Dare Arts Council Gallery, or $18 at the door the day of the event.
Sponsored by the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau, proceeds will benefit Dare County Arts Council’s program outreach on Cape Hatteras and the Community Music School.
