The Pharcyde To Play OBX Shred Fest

Posted By on April 26, 2017

Alternative hip hop group The Pharcyde will return to the Outer Banks for the first time in almost 20 years to join Southern Culture on the Skids, as previously reported here, and headline the second annual Dare2Care OBX Shred Fest, which will be held on May 20 in Nags Head.

The Pharcyde was formed in the late 1980s and has maintained a ‘willfully weird vision’ with their left field, but still South-Central sensibility. The four visionary rappers continue to tour and record, both collaboratively and in solo projects.

The main stage will also include performances by surf, rockabilly band Southern Culture on the Skids, Manday Huge, Ruth Wyand and the Tribe of One, the Mustang Outreach Student Bands Grace and The Dudes and Side Project, and the debut of Dare County’s first inclusive rock band the Dare2Care OBX Shredders.

“John and I have a common love of music and a passion for creating community through music,” said Shelli Gates of the Motu Music Foundation. “That is the fundamental premise of the Motu Music Foundation. Dare2Care OBX shares that same passion and is raising money at their annual event, Shred Fest, to create music programs that include our local Veterans and specially abled adults. We are proud to partner with Lisa on this endeavor and to provide production support for the event, but we are honored and inspired to work with these musicians on a weekly basis.”

A second stage will host performances Ramp Side where all the professional skateboarders, BMX riders, and Chicks in Bowls will be shredding the ramp. The bands Fixture, The Edge of Tomorrow, and Kepone Cowboys will be playing Ramp Side throughout the event.

“You do not want to miss the opening ceremonies as we honor our WWII Veterans,” said Dare2Care OBX Founder and Radio Broadcaster Lisa Brickhouse Davis. “We will have the Knights of Columbus Color Guard marching into the event, the placement of the five military branch flags, along with the National Anthem performed by Angelo Sonnesso before the Dare2Care OBX Shredders take the stage.”

The event will also feature the Dare2Care OBX Expression Session Art Village, which will have 10 different local artists selling their wares. There will be a focus on upcycled and recycled arts, such as jewelry made from recycled surf resin. There will also be a Dare2Care OBX Community corner showcasing the Outer Banks’ nonprofits and other civic organizations, with an emphasis on health and wellbeing with alternative methods of healing including yoga, meditation and acupuncture.

Presented by the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau, the family-friendly event will also feature roller derby women, Special Olympics athletes, food vendors, an artist village, a silent auction, the Dare2Care OBX Community Corner, games, and an obstacle course in the Kidz Zone designed by First Flight Adventure Park.

Shred Fest is an annual fundraiser for Dare2Care OBX, which builds awareness for Veterans and encourages inclusion for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities within the Outer Banks community. The event supports multiple initiatives including free, year round music classes for Outer Banks Veterans and people with special needs through the Dare2Care OBX music program.

Dare2Care OBX brings awareness, support and healing to area Veterans and increases community inclusion for people of all ability levels.

OBX Shred Fest is happening on Saturday, May 20 from 1:30 to 8:30pm at the Soundside Event Site in Nags Head.

General admission are $20, or admission for Veterans, Active Military, students, and children ages 6-18 is $10, and children 5 and under are free with a ticketed adult, available for online purchase here.
