Southern Culture On The Skids To Headline OBX Shred Fest 2017
Chapel Hill, North Carolina-based surf, rockabilly, country-fried legends Southern Culture on the Skids will headline the second annual Dare2Care OBX Shred Fest in Nags Head in May.
“Southern Culture on the Skids are lookin’ forward to dropping in on the Outer Banks for a set of double overhead fun with good music for a good cause. Hope to see you in the lineup,” said Southern Culture drummer Dave Hartman.
The main stage will also include performances by Manday Huge, Ruth Wyand and the Tribe of One, the Mustang Outreach Student Bands Grace and The Dudes and Side Project, and the Dare2Care OBX Shredders.
The Dare2Care OBX Shredders will make their stage debut at this year’s Shred Fest. The Shredders are Dare County’s first inclusive rock band, which is made up of seven members of the Veteran, IDD and Typically Developing communities. The band receives weekly lessons from Outer Banks musician and Triangle Blues Society Winner Ruth Wyand and guest instructors Shelli Gates and John Wilkinson of the Motu Music Foundation at The College of the Albemarle in Manteo.
“When someone realizes they can play an instrument, sing a note or even move to a groove there’s a happiness and pride that comes over them,’’ said Ruth Wyand. “To be able to help these musicians find the music in them is one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. Through them I have regained my belief in the power of music”.
A second stage will host performances Ramp Side where all the professional skateboarders, BMX riders, and Chicks in Bowls will be shredding the ramp. The bands Fixture, The Edge of Tomorrow, and Kepone Cowboys will be playing Ramp Side throughout the event.
Presented by the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau, the family-friendly event will also feature roller derby women, Special Olympics athletes, food vendors, an artist village, a silent auction, the Dare2Care OBX Community Corner, games, and an obstacle course in the Kidz Zone designed by First Flight Adventure Park.
Shred Fest is an annual fundraiser for Dare2Care OBX, which builds awareness for Veterans and encourages inclusion for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities within the Outer Banks community. The event supports multiple initiatives including free, year round music classes for Outer Banks Veterans and people with special needs through the Dare2Care OBX music program.
Dare2Care OBX brings awareness, support and healing to area Veterans and increases community inclusion for people of all ability levels.
The 2nd annual Dare2Care OBX Shred Fest is happening on Saturday, May 20 from 1:30 to 8:30pm at the Soundside Event Site in Nags Head.
Tickets can be purchased online at Dare2CareOBX.com. General admission is $20, admission for Veterans, Active Military, students, and children ages 6-18 is $10, and children 5 and under are free with a ticketed adult.
