Weekend Movie Update – Dec. 21, 2016: ‘Sing’ Like An Animal

Christmas always brings about a lot of big movies to round out the year just in time for awards consideration next year, and while Rogue One will obviously continue to dominate the box office, there are six new movies opening in theaters locally this week.

Here’s your Outer Banks Movie Update for the extended Christmas Weekend and the week to follow, starting December 21, 2016 (through January 5, 2017)!

Leading this week’s new releases is the animated musical Sing (rated PG), which is set in a world much like ours but inhabited entirely by animals, all of which are excited to be auditioning for a reality competition series for singers.

Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games, X-Men: Apocalypse) and Chris Pratt (Jurassic World, Guardians of the Galaxy) go on a 120-year journey into space only to be mysteriously awoken 90 years too early in the sci-fi thriller Passengers (rated PG13), now playing at R/C Theatres KDH Movies 10 in Kill Devil Hills.

The latest video game franchise to make the leap into a live action movie is the fantasy adventure Assassin’s Creed (rated PG13), now playing at R/C Theatres KDH Movies 10 in Kill Devil Hills.

An all-star cast, lead by Will Smith (Suicide Squad), does a new take on a familiar It’s a Wonderful Life theme in the new drama Collateral Beauty (rated PG13), also now playing at RC Theatres in Kill Devil Hills.

An up-tight dad can’t stand his daughter’s new boyfriend in the raunchy comedy Why Him? (rated R), officially opening at R/C Theatres in Kill Devil Hills on Friday (Dec. 23), with preview screenings on Thursday (Dec. 22) at 7:10 and 9:40pm. 

Laugh along with the hilarious red band (age restricted) trailer below!

Rounding out this week’s new releases is the drama Fences (rated PG13), directed by and starring Denzel Washington, set in 1950s Pttsburgh, officially opening on Christmas Day (Sunday,Dec. 25) at R/C Theatres, with preview screenings on Christmas Eve (Saturday, Dec. 24) at 5 and 7pm.

The latest animated family film from Disney, Moana (rated PG) surfs into the historic Pioneer Theatre in Manteo, starting on Friday, Dec. 23, playing for two weeks (through Jan. 5).
