“Artrageous was originally created as a community effort to help establish our Parks and Rec county program as a benefit for our children. Our theme “Art is Community” was chosen this year to highlight how much we love our community,” says Artrageous co-chair Ginny Flowers.

Co-chair Martha Butcher adds, “Many of the children that came to Artrageous in past decades have gone on to become accomplished painters, musicians and designers. Several have won DCAC art scholarships and now many of them are volunteers, helping the next generation of kids express themselves creatively.”

For the marketing of this year’s event, DCAC chose a painting by Ellen Usher of the Monarch Beach Club and her caregiver, Kayleigh Trott, specifically to highlight the “Art is Community” theme.  In the past two years, DCAC has launched a number of community initiatives to provide artistic opportunities to special populations in need, such as Art in the Park with GEM Adult Services for adults with memory loss, the OBX Veterans Writing Project, art classes with the SNAP Group for children with special needs and helping secure grant funding for art supplies for the Monarch Beach Club.

Artrageous is organized and staffed by volunteer artists, musicians, crafters, dancers, writers, photographers and other creative people who dedicate their time and energy to the event each year.  Many of the arts and crafts activities for children will be hosted by partner nonprofit organizations.

Proceeds from this community-wide event benefit art education and cultural programming in all Dare County Schools, the DCAC endowment fund and the Artrageous Youth Scholarship Fund.  Sponsors, volunteers and artists are encouraged to become involved in this Dare County community tradition.
