Surf’s Up in September at Dare County Arts Council
Celebrating the art of surfing, the Collectors Classic Longboard Exhibit paired with Outer Banks surf photography by Mickey McCarthy will be on display at Dare County Arts Council in downtown Manteo September 2-30.
Returning for its second consecutive year, the Collectors Classic Longboard Exhibit by Steve Wise will feature a curated selection of 30 unique surfboards from surfers across the Outer Banks.
“Surfboards are a work of art. If you have ever watched a shaper craft a board, you know first hand what I am talking about,” said Curator Steve Wise. “The shaper is a sculptor, he hones his skill and gets better over time. The board needs to be function over form. When we say he is an artist we are talking about the shape of the board, not the artwork on the board.”
Mickey McCarthy will highlight Outer Banks waves and nature in his photography, which will be in custom frames that he built to accent each photo.
“I’m trying to show a celebration of our awesome surfing community, it is a very special place on our little blue planet,” said Outer Banks photographer Mickey McCarthy. “It’s a place of big sky and vivid colors where the best surf on the East Coast breaks on some the most beautiful beaches in the country.”
On Friday, September 16 surf and art enthusiasts are invited to Dare County Arts Council for the longboard and photography exhibit reception at 6pm. Guests will be able to meet local surfboard collectors and photographer Mickey McCarthy.
Following the reception, Dare County Arts Council will host a film screening that is part of the Surfalorus Film Festival.
Presented by Outer Banks Blue, Surfalorus is a free family-friendly event featuring international and regional surf film screenings on the Outer Banks September 15-17. The event is sponsored by the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau and Front Porch Café.
More Surfalorus feature film details and screening locations will be released in the upcoming weeks.
