Weekend Movie Update – June 24, 2016: ‘Independence Day’ Attacks
The angry aliens and a killer shark are back in theaters this week, while Matthew McConaughey fights the good fight in the real Civil War, and Dory swims into The Pioneer.

From Disney and Pixar, the animated sequel Finding Dory (rated PG) continues at the Pioneer Theatre in Manteo.

The aliens that attacked for no apparent reason 20 years ago in the landmark blockbuster Independence Day are back for another, much bigger attack in the new sequel Resurgence (rated PG13), opening Friday at RC Theatres in Kill Devil Hills, with two early preview screenings set for tonight (Thursday) at 8 and 10pm.

In what looks like it might as well be “Jaws: Reborn”, the thriller The Shallows (rated PG13) puts Blake Lively against a giant killer shark, also opening Friday at RC Theatres in Kill Devil Hills, with preview screenings tonight (Thursday) at 7:35 and 9:40pm.

The real life drama Free State of Jones (rated R) tells the true story of a defiant Southern farmer who leads an extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy during the Civil War, opening Friday at RC Theatres in Kill Devil Hills, with preview screenings tonight (Thursday) at 7:10 and 9:40pm.
