Local Comedy Play To Premiere At Baum Center, Kill Devil Hills
What happens when the owners of a bar each decide independently to surprise the other by selling the place?
The Tides, an original play by local theater staple Julia Scheer, will enjoy its world premiere at the Thomas A. Baum Center in Kill Devil Hills in February.
While Scheer wrote most of the show herself, she did have assistance from Tom Filkins and Harry Herzer. The show is based in a small local bar on the Outer Banks and the owners Ebb and Flo have decided to sell the place to separate buyers and surprise the other by moving them to where they have always dreamed of living.
Add into the mix a barmaid that has trouble remembering what day it is, a bored local police officer that has a crush on her and a crusty old local bar fly at the end of the bar. The cast also includes Darryl the person Flo is trying to sell it to along with an attorney, representing the other buying party. It is rounded out with a couple of local fishermen, a busybody gossip and an ex-trophy wife looking for another husband.
“The concept of The Tides came from Monty Montcalm. We were working on another production together and he said “we should write a show about a bar down here.” Before the night was over The Tides along with Ebb & Flo had been born.” Said Scheer. “I’m extremely excited to see this come to life, I have been working on it on and off for over ten years now. This is the first time I have written for the stage, and it has been an interesting experience. My cast has helped me immensely with the final tweaks to the script and I owe all of them my thanks.”
There will be six shows over four days, a Friday night performance and two on Saturday.
Show dates are February 5, 6, 12, and 13 at the Baum Center.
Show times are 7:00 on Friday and Saturday night and a 2:00 Saturday matinee performance. Tickets are $10 in advance for adults and $7 for students and seniors 55+ and are only available at the Baum Center in Kill Devil Hills, door sales will occur only if it has not sold out in advance.

All of the proceeds will be used to purchase lighting equipment for Center Front the non-profit theater group at the Baum Center.
