In recent weeks, the National Park Service Outer Banks Group has been joined by AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps) team, “Delta 6.”  The team has provided valuable service to the agency and the community by working on projects at Cape Hatteras National Seashore and Wright Brothers National Memorial.

“Delta 6” improved public safety along NC Highway 12 by clearing overgrown brush and trees along approximately four miles of roadside.  The additional two to four feet of clearance along the road shoulder provides for safer pull-offs, clearer field of vision for drivers, and safer visitor experience and passage.

At the Wright Brothers National Memorial, the team improved a significant cultural landscape feature at the park, the Big Kill Devil Hill, by clearing scrub brush, grass patches, and brambles on the 90 foot-high, half-mile circumference hill.  This work also enhanced the appearance of the hill for all visitors.

At the Bodie Island Lighthouse, the team cleaned the inside walls by giving it a thorough scrub from top to bottom removing and erasing many handprints and scuff marks from another busy summer of park visitation!

AmeriCorps NCCC is a full-time, residential, national service program in which 1,200 young adults serve nationwide each year.  During their 10-month term, all of the Corps Members, 18 to 24 years of age, work on teams comprised of eight to twelve individuals who perform work on projects that address critical needs related to natural and other disasters, infrastructure improvement, environmental stewardship and conservation, energy conservation, and urban and rural development.

Members mentor students, construct and rehabilitate low-income housing, respond to natural disasters, clean up streams, help communities develop emergency plans, and address countless other local needs.  “Delta 6” works out of the Southern Region campus in Vicksburg, one of five regional hubs in the United States and serves eleven states in the southeast part of the country.  The other campuses are located in Denver, Colorado, Sacramento, California, Baltimore, Maryland and Vinton, Iowa.

In exchange for their service, Corps Members receive $5,730 to help pay for college, or to pay back existing student loans.  Other benefits include a small living stipend, room and board, leadership development, increased self-confidence, and the knowledge that, through active citizenship, people can indeed make a difference.

AmeriCorps NCCC is administered by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency.  The Corporation improves lives, strengthens communities, and fosters civic engagement through service and volunteering.

Outer Banks Group staff would like to extend a heartfelt “thank you!” to this year’s AmeriCorps “Delta 6” work team.
