Dare Arts Council Hosting Sea Turtle Clay Workshop
Dare County Arts Council is pleased to present a polymer clay workshop with artist Cyndi Buell, creating sea turtle pendants and sculptures. Cyndi says, “Sea turtles are some of our oldest living creatures on our planet. Their grace and ability to live through so much time makes me think about them as time travelers, wearing time machines and propellers on their shells to move through time and space continuum.”
The workshop will take place at Dare County Arts Council, 300 Queen Elizabeth Avenue in downtown Manteo, on October 10, 10am – 4pm. It is open to all skill levels to students ages 16 and up. Tuition is $85 for DCAC members, or $95 for nonmembers, and all supplies are included.
In this class, students will be making a polymer clay sea turtle with antique watch contained mechanism with watch face (aka time machine), small metal found object, wire, gears, cogs and small jump rings. The class will quickly review polymer clay basics, so we can move right into creating our sea turtle. The goal of this class is to learn how to build a simple animal, attach legs, a head and create its personality with the watch faces. One can use it as wearable art or as a small sculpture. You will also know how to use strips of clay to hold the watch faces in place, creating a utilitarian use of the clay as a securing process along with head pins and wire to secure valuable beads, gears and cogs while wearing your sea turtle, if you so choose.
The final product and outcome or your adventure with your sea turtle will be one very beautiful, cheeky, funny, serious, chock full-of-personality-one-of-a-kind steampunk sea turtle.
