A great day for Lane Dickson got even better on Sept. 12, when her boyfriend surprised her with a marriage proposal just minutes after the finish of the sixth annual SAGA Outer Banks Triathlon.
During the awards presentations, Mark Natividad knelt down on one knee near the shore of the Croatan Sound, pulled out a ring and proposed to Dickson. Amidst cheers from surrounding triathlon competitors, she accepted.
Dickson, an upstate New York native who now lives in Goldsboro, told the Sentinel she has been competing regularly in triathlons for the past eight years. While Natividad doesn’t compete, he accompanies and encourages her as she travels and competes with a team of 10 from Goldsboro called “the Trifectas.”
“We had talked about getting married, sort of hypothetically,” she told the Sentinel, “and I knew he had been looking at rings. But I wasn’t expecting it to happen when it did.”
