Summer Programs Announced At Outer Banks Wildlife Refuges
This summer you are invited to get outside and enjoy your Outer Banks national wildlife refuges.
Summer programs started on Tuesday, June 2, and will continue through Friday, August 28.
Read on for the full schedule of weekly programs offered this summer at our area wildlife refuges!
Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge
- Wednesday, 7:00—9:00 a.m. – Alligator River Guided Van Tour – Join us for a personal tour through popular areas for viewing and photographing wildlife. FEE
- Wednesday, 9:00 a.m.—12:00 p.m. – Alligator River Canoe Tour – Milltail Creek Paddling Trails take you deep into the heart of Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. Paddle the shady blackwater canals; learn about the history of the area. FEE
- Wednesday, 5:30—7:00 p.m. – Bear Necessities – Alligator River is home to the largest population of black bears in eastern North Carolina! Learn more about what makes the Refuge such a good home for our largest mammal and travel in your vehicle in search of bears and other wildlife.
- Wednesday, 7:30—9:00 p.m. – Red Wolf Howling – Come and learn about the endangered red wolf during a short presentation and journey to the heart of the refuge for an adventurous attempt to hear our captive red wolves produce their haunting sounds. No reservations. FEE
- Thursday, 10:00 a.m.—12:00 p.m. and 5:00—7:00 p.m. – Alligator River Canoe Tour – Milltail Creek Paddling Trails take you deep into the heart of Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. Paddle the shady blackwater canals; learn about the history of the area. FEE
- Friday, 8:30—11:00 a.m. – Alligator River Guided Open-air Tram Tour – Join us for a trip around the refuge and learn about the wild lands and wildlife. FEE
- Friday, 1:00—4:00 p.m. – Alligator River Canoe Tour – Milltail Creek Paddling Trails take you deep into the heart of Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge. Paddle the shady blackwater canals; learn about the history of the area. FEE
Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge
- Tuesday, 2:30—3:30 p.m. – Turtle Talk – Learn about land and sea turtles and how you can help in their conservation.
- Wednesday & Friday, 8:00—9:30 a.m. – Pea Island Bird Walk – Pea Island is for the birds – literally! Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge is home to nearly 400 species of birds. Whether you’re a beginner or an expert, you’ll enjoy this casual stroll beside North Pond.
- Wednesday & Friday, 10:00 a.m.—12:00 p.m. – Pea Island Canoe Tour – Visit the quiet side of Pea Island. Explore the marshes, islands, and creeks of Pamlico Sound. Geared towards families. FEE
- Wednesday, 2:30—3:30 p.m. – Birds and Their Adaptations – Learn about birds and how they are different depending on their habitats.
- Thursday, 9:00 a.m.—12:00 p.m. – Pea Island Canoe Tour – Visit the quiet side of Pea Island. Explore the marshes, islands, and creeks of Pamlico Sound. FEE
- Thursday, 2:30—3:30 p.m. – Bees, Bats, and Butterflies – Pollinators are all around us and are necessary for our survival. Find out how these critters help us and what you can do to help them!
National Wildlife Refuges Visitor Center
- Thursday, 2:30—3:30 p.m. – Who Goes There? – Can you tell which critter has been visiting the forest? What do they leave behind besides tracks and scat? We’ll find out on a short walk and then return to the classroom to make a mold of a track to take home with you.
- Friday, 10:00—11:00 a.m. – Preschool Young Naturalist Program – Join us for a story, craft, and short walk on the nature trail. Geared towards preschoolers, but all ages are welcome.
