The First Flight Society and the National Park Service continued the tradition of honoring the accomplishments of Wilbur and Orville Wright at the 111th anniversary celebration of the first heavier-than-air powered flight at Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills earlier today, December 17.
The Northeastern High School Band from Elizabeth City opened the event with a Christmas-flavored musical prelude, followed by the wreath-laying ceremony honoring the local Outer Banks witnesses and their descendants, as well as the Wrights and their descendants.
All eyes went to the sky for the annual flyover tribute to the Wright Brothers, featuring a number of different aircraft.
Keynote speaker Dr. Peggy Chabrian, President and Founder of Women in Aviation International, paid tribute to Col. Mary S. Feik, Civil Air Patrol, who is the 2014 inductee into the First Flight Society’s Paul E. Garber First Flight Shrine.
