Theatre of Dare Announces Open Auditions For 'Oliver!'
Theatre of Dare has that open auditions will be held in December for the upcoming production of Oliver!.
Theatre of Dare will present Lionel Bart’s popular musical OLIVER! on February 28, March 1,2,7,8 and 9, 2014. The production will be staged at the COA auditorium in Manteo.
Under the direction of Charles H. Massey, the show will feature a large cast of children, teens and adults. Based on the novel Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens, the musical follows the life of the orphaned Oliver from his miserable existence in a workhouse to his work in an undertakers shop and his escape to London where he meets the Artful Dodger and Fagin. Soon he learns to pick pockets as a means of survival.
Along the way he meets a colorful collection of characters drawn from Dickens’ own experience and his vivid imagination.
The Lionel Bart musical first appeared in the early 1960’s and following a very successful run in London moved to Broadway under the guidance of master producer David Merrick. OLIVER! quickly became an international hit winning the Tony Award for both lyrics and score. In 1968 it became an Academy Award winning musical movie earning six of the coveted awards.
The show has remained popular over the years and has enjoyed numerous revivals and has been performed in summer theatres, community theatres and schools throughout the world. The Theatre of Dare’s production will involve over fifty community members both on stage and behind the scenes. A
ll roles for the production are open and auditions will be held in early December.
Monday, December 9th from 4 to 7pm at the COA Auditorium. This audition is for young children only. They will be asked to sing and to move as a group. These children will play the orphans in the workhouse.
Anyone interested in playing Oliver should come to this audition as Oliver starts out in this group. This group should be from seven to ten or twelve. While all of the orphans are boys, girls may audition and will be dressed as boys.
Tuesday, December 10th from 4:00 to 7:00 at the COA Auditorium. This audition will be for the older children only. They will be asked to sing and to move as a group. These children will play the members of Fagin’s gang and are involved in several musical numbers.
Anyone interested in playing the Artful Dodger should audition with this group. This group should be from twelve to sixteen. Charlotte and Bet will also come from this group.
Tuesday, December 10th from 7:00 to 10:00 at the COA Auditorium. This audition will be for adults for all roles. Actors will be asked to sing and read for certain roles. Movement will also be required. Sides will be assigned for certain roles.
Friday, December 13th from 6:30 to 10:00 at the Lost Colony Building. Call backs will be held for specific roles and actors will be required to read scenes with assigned actors. Singing will also be required.
Rehearsals will not start until after Christmas, but scripts and music will be assigned before the holidays.
Don Bridge will serve as producer for this production, Janelle Parrish as Stage Manager, and Gretchen Bender as Musical Director.
