Dare Arts Council To Host Carolina Veterans Weekend In November
The Dare County Arts Council is honoring the men and women of America’s armed forces this November with the first Carolina Veterans Weekend, featuring a unique writing workshop specifically designed for combat veterans.
The Dare County Arts Council in partnership with the newly-established Dare County Veterans Advisory Council will host Carolina Veterans Weekend, a celebration of veterans and their families, expressed through the arts.
The centerpiece of the event is a writing workshop led by Ron Capps, where instructors of the Veterans Writing Project, a non-profit foundation that teaches combat veterans to express their military experiences through literature, will lead 25 to 50 veterans through a two-day workshop of intensive writing instruction.
The artistic goal of the project is to teach the veterans the art of literature and to emerge from the weekend with many moving literary works composed by the workshop participants. The hope is that, additionally, the experience will have health benefits for the writers by enabling them to tell their stories of war.
In the experience of the instructors of the Veterans Writing Project, their writing students often testify to the relief of being able to fully express the transformation experience of combat.
The Carolina Veterans Weekend Writing Workshop with Ron Capps will take place on November 16 and 17 at the Coastal Studies Institute in Wanchese.
The weekend will kickoff with the Carolina Veterans Concert on Friday, November 15 at Roanoke Island Festival Park, starting at 7pm. Click here for our preview!
