Weekend Movie Update – Dec. 21, 2012: Tarantino 'Unchained'

It’s a big week in theaters, with no less than seven new releases opening in time for Christmas, including the latest from directors Quentin Tarantino and Judd Apatow, while the Guardians rise at The Pioneer.

Here’s your Outer Banks Movie Update for the weekend of Dec. 21, 2012!

[UPDATE – 12/28/12: There are no new releases opening locally the weekend of Dec. 28, 2012. In addition, The Pioneer Theatre in Manteo will be closed the week of Dec. 28 – Jan. 3, 2013.]

Dreamworks’ new animated adventure Rise of the Guardians (rated PG) opens at the historic Pioneer Theatre in Manteo, starting this Friday for a one week run.

In the film, the immortal Guardians, including Santa Claus (Alec Baldwin), the Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman), and the Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher), must protect the word’s children from an evil boogeyman named Pitch Black (Jude Law).

Showtime at The Pioneer is 8pm nightly.

Disney-Pixar’s classic Monsters Inc. (rated PG) gets a fresh 3D makeover, starting today (Wednesday) at KDH Movies 10 in Kill Devil Hills.

Also starting today (Wednesday), Seth Rogen (Knocked Up, Pineapple Express) is on the mother of all road trips with his nagging mom played by Barbra Streisand in The Guilt Trip (rated PG13).

Opening on Friday, the comedy This is 40 (rated R) is the “sort of sequel” to Knocked Up (2007) from director Judd Apatow (The 40 Year Old Virgin, Funny People).

The new film reunites Apatow’s real life wife Leslie Mann (17 Again) and daughters Maude and Iris with the always hilarious Paul Rudd (I Love You Man, Halloween: Resurrection) as the family first inroduced in Knocked Up.

The film also stars Megan Fox (Transformers, Jennifer’s Body), Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids), Albert Brooks (Drive), John Lithgow (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), and Jason Segel (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, The Muppets), repising his role from Knocked Up.

For action fans, Tom Cruise (Top Gun, Interview with the Vampire) is a one-man force of justice in the new thriller Jack Reacher (rated PG13), also opening this Friday.

Also starring Rosamund Pike (Die Another Day) and Richard Jenkins (The Cabin in the Woods), you can watch a trailer for Jack Reacher below!

Opening this Tuesday, three new releases arrive in theaters on Christmas Day (Dec. 25), headlined by the return of director Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill) with his slave-revenge epic Django Unchained (rated R).

Jamie Foxx (Ray) stars as a former slave out to save his wife from her sadistic new owner played by Leonardo DiCaprio (Inception, Titanic), assisted by a bounty hunter played by Christoph Waltz (Ingourious Basterds).

The western also stars Kerry Washington of ABC’s Scandal, along with Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown) and Don Johnson (Miami Vice, Machete).

The broadway hit Les Miserables (rated PG13) comes to the big screen in a big way, also opening on Christmas Day with an all-star cast including Anne Hathaway (The Dark Knight Rises), Hugh Jackman (The Wolverine), Helena Bonham Carter (Dark Shadows), and Russell Crowe (Man of Steel).

All of the cast did their own actual singing in the musical romance, directed by Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech).

Finally, Billy Crystal (When Harry Met Sally) and Bette Midler (Beaches) are clueless grandparents in the family comedy Parental Guidance (rated PG).
