Choir Director, Maestro Travis W. Alexander, was recently named National Conductor for the 105 Voices of History HBCU National Concert Choir’s 5th Season Celebration held in September at the Andrew Mellon Auditorium in Washington, DC.  In this role he spent half the year traveling to various Historically Black Colleges and Universities ( HBCU’s) across the country to rehearse the various groups of singers brought together regionally to prepare music for this big concert featuring representation from each of the 105 HBCUs. “This National Choir is a conductor’s dream made up of the Crème de Crème of choral singers.  Each school conductor selects the very best student to participate, and they must go through a rigorous audition process to be a part,” said Alexander. Three senior music majors Tenor James Thomas and Sopranos Stacee Lyles and Chelsey Stanley represented A&T in the National Choir.

Maestro has conducted choral concerts throughout Europe, including such venues as the Duomo and Basilica di Santa Croce in Florence, Italy, Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta in Venice, and in England at the Bristol Cathedral, Blenheim Palace, Quedgeley Parish and St. Paul’s. Maestro Alexander has worked extensively with Maestro James Meena and Opera Carolina in concert with Denyce Graves, Mezzo-Soprano and in a production of AIDA. Maestro is also noted as a singer and for his helden tenor quality voice. He has sung both tenor and baritone repertoire.

The University Choir is the official ensemble of the university and the major choral unit for the College of Arts and Sciences and Department of Visual and Performing Arts. It serves the campus and community by providing music for events such as Convocation, Commencement, Inaugurations, Founder’s Day, MLK Celebrations, Greensboro Bicentennial and other campus and community events. The University Choir produces at least two major concerts per year on campus and extensively tours annually in the spring. This ensemble also serves as the major ensemble for all music majors specializing in voice and keyboard.
