Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump, Saving Private Ryan, Big) is in Virginia Beach filming scenes for Captain Phillips, about real life cargo ship captain Richard Phillips, who was taken hostage by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean in 2009.

Filming was reportedly taking place in open water off Naval Station Norfolk last week.

The film is based on Phillips’ book  “A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea”, in which he recounts offering himself as a hostage and facing a five-day standoff that only ended with a rescue by Navy SEALs.

The production is expected to be in Virginia Beach through June 30.

Captain Phillips opens in theaters on March 22, 2013.
