Tom Hanks to Film True Pirate Story in VA Beach!

Academy Award winning actor Tom Hanks (Forrest Gump; Saving Private Ryan) is coming to Virginia Beach to film his next high profile movie – a true story of real life pirates from the director of United 93 and The Bourne Ultimatum

Hanks will star along in Captain Phillips, about real life cargo ship captain Richard Phillips, who was taken hostage by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean in 2009.

The fim is based on Phillips’ book  “A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea”, in which he recounts offering himself as a hostage and facing a five-day standoff that only ended with a rescue by Navy SEALs.

Tom Hanks won the Academy Award for best actor consecutively in 1994 and 1995 for Philadelphia and Forrest Gump, and was nominated for his work in Big, Saving Private Ryan, and Cast Away.

Catherine Keener stars in 'Captain Phillips' for director Paul Greengrass.

Catherine Keener (The 40-Year-Old Virgin; Into the Wild) will play Phillips’ wife, Andrea. Keener was nominated for the Academy Award for best support actress in 2000 for Being John Malkovich and in 2006 for Capote.

Filming is expected to take place this summer.

Captain Phillips opens in theaters on March 22, 2013.
