Lukas Nelson Brings Real Rock to Kelly’s [Concert Report]
Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real rocked long and hard – for over two and a half hours – on stage at Kelly’s in Nags Head, NC on May 11, 2012, while a crowded house got down in roaring approval.
The son of music icon Willie Nelson will join his famous father on NBC’s Late Night with Jimmy Fallon tonight (May 14th) to promote their first ever recorded collaboration, a new album called Heroes that will be released tomorrow – but there’s no way the talk show performance will top what concert goers got on the Outer Banks three days ago.
Nelson’s voice is hauntingly familiar to even casual listeners of any of his legendary father’s (Willie Nelson) hundreds of songs over the years, but Willie never shredded on guitar the way Lukas does.
Lukas told us in our exclusive interview that the latest Promise of the Real album, Wasted, was inspired by The Rolling Stones, and it was evident in the grooving stomp of numerous tracks performed, but overall the Nags Head set screamed American blues.

The band was not afraid to slow it down numerous times last Friday for extended jams, including covers of Willie Nelson’s “Texas Flood” and Pink Floyd’s “Money”, only to speed it up in the next song and drive the crowd into a frenzy all over again.
The rhythm section was relentlessly tight in following Nelson’s roller coaster solos, and each instrumentalist was given his own time to shine in the spotlight, with bass and percusion solos fit for an arena ten times the size of Kelly’s.
