Storytelling

The Land of Beginnings storytelling sessions are always popular and all three sessions are free and open to the public.

The first session, Tuesday, April 17, will be held at the Lost Colony Building at Fort Raleigh on Roanoke Island. And the second will be held on Wednesday, April 18, at the Black Pelican restaurant in Kitty Hawk. Storytellers for both of these sessions will be Queen Elizabeth and Sir Walter Raleigh, aka Barbara Hird and Bill Rea. The Queen and her sidekick will tell stories about the era in which they lived. Both sessions begin at 7 p.m. and are free. Those wishing to have dinner at the Black Pelican may do so downstairs before the show.

The third storytelling event will be held on Thursday, April 19, at the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo Community Center. Moderated by Danny Couch, this is always a favorite for those who enjoy tall-tales and yesteryear stories. Storytellers will be announced before the event that begins at 7 p.m.

Coastal Studies Institute Tours

UNC Coastal Studies Institute “Hard Hat” campus tours will be offered on Tuesday and Wednesday, April 17 and 18, at 3 p.m. in Skyco. The campus is located in Skyco. A construction sign marks the entrance, and the drive is packed sand. Park at the Whiting-Turner construction trailer where the group will gather. Because the campus is still a construction site, all visitors are asked to sign a release and are issued a hard hat (required) and a brightly colored vest. A maximum of 30 guests can be accommodated in each tour. For safety purposes, all visitors must wear closed-toed shoes (no sandals or flip flops).

Building elevators are not yet operational, and visitors will be invited to climb three floors to get a full overview of the campus and its activity. Inclement weather will not cancel the event since once inside the main building, the entire area is free from bad weather. Children must be accompanied by a responsible adult.
