  1. That is a very handsome group of men. Not only are they handsome, but they are very talented. They represent South Nags Head quite well and you can see them again this year, along with their equally talented neighbors, at Kelly’s St. Patrick Day Parade. Come watch them!

  2. My wife,Stacy, and I were at the Port o Call show last night. TR3 was amazing on stage. We drove from Raleigh, NC to catch this show and was most excited to hear that Stanley Jordan would be making a special appearance. The performance at Kelly’s in 1995, we were there, and as well, were silent from the experience Tim and Stanley gave us… It was a new beginning for Stacy and I, Stanley Jordan is now a part of our lives… Thanx Tim…

  3. Loved the Event. All of the Guests where as nice as they could be. MonsterMan Clive Hall and his Daughter Constance where a hit with everyone including my 2year old son, who I think everyone loved…. Alice Creeper Rocked Friday night, I was thrilled to see and meet some of the band. Willam Forsthye was super nice, my wife loved meeting Jeremy London, Michael Biehn was stoked that my 12 year old boy loved Terminator, as he said ” a movie that came out like 15 years before he was born.” Can’t wait for Blood on the Beach II, hope some of the same vedor/guests are part of that one, Bonjo and the Bloke where fun to see and meet hope they remain part of BOTB.

  4. Very cool. Hopefully next time it will get more publicity, as had I not been at Towncenter when the throng of zombies passed by I would not have known about it!
(Or maybe the lack of publicity helped keep the crowd from being too much?)

  9. Studio 12 is my favorite art activity at OBX! The owners are so friendly and welcoming; they make being creative a joyful experience. Even when their beautiful store/workshop is full of people of all ages they take the time to help each person get the most out of the art project they are making. I’ve been going to Studio 12 for a long time and it’s fun to be part of seeing an island family business thrive.

  10. I know it doesn’t say our name but Silver Bonsai Gallery could be a great write in for this on the “other” line.
After 16 years of entertaining visitors at our Fine art and craft gallery here in the OBX and crafting unique jewelry designs we have often been told the entertainment value of our Gallery is top notch . So if you feel inspired write us in 🙂 Thanks!

  11. Pea Island Art Gallery is our favorite gallery in the OBX, and we’ve been to them all. This isn’t to “dis” the other galleries – there are so many fantastic ones there – but Kim Robertson is fantastic at making visitors feel welcome. She stocks unusual gifts and truly exceptional artists’ and craftspeople’s work. Each time I go there, she has new work. I spend hours there browsing and listening to her tell stories about the artists who created the special items she has on display. It’s truly and extraordinary gallery.

  12. I have to case my vote for Yellowhouse Gallery. Not only is there some incredible art and photography there, but the Eve, one of the owners, graciously hands out gallery guides and explains how to use them to visitors. She says if she doesn’t have what they are looking for at Yellowhouse, they might find it at one of the galleries in the guide. I think it’s so nice that she puts the customers needs ahead of trying to make a sale in her own gallery. Kinda reminds me of Santa in “Miracle On 34th Street”. Eve personally knows most of the artists and photographers featured in Yellowhouse and she is truly happy to repersent their work. Then there’s the other owner, Pete, who will gladly frame whatever treasure you find. You not only leave with a beach memory, if you spend any time talking to Eve or Pete, you leave with new friends.

  13. So happy to see our Gallery’s name has now appeared on the Ballet YAY! and I of course have to agree with the above comments… hard to name a “best ” gallery with such a great circle of galleries working together to make the Outer Banks not just a Beach destination but an Arts destination! That’s one of our favorite things about the area…and what drew me back home to open up the Silver Bonsai Gallery…:)

  14. I found out about the Christmas Tree Lighting and Parade about five years ago when I was looking at the Town of Manteo website. I thought, wow! What a cool event, in my favorite place! I convinced a friend of mine to make the trip to see the lighting and the parade, and have been coming all the way from Maryland for the event every year since! It’s a great atmosphere, and it really gets me into the Christmas spirit! I love Manteo!

  15. There really isn’t any reason to own this movie on disk. I watched 3DD when it first hit pay per view a few months ago. I remember ordering it online before I left my office at DISH and that it was ready to watch in 3D by the time I got home to my Hopper DVR. Last time I checked it’s still available too. As much fun as 3DD was, it just wasn’t as good as the first film. I would save the money and stream/rent Piranha 3dd before buying it on disk.

  16. Outer Banks Art Galleries ROCK! It is one of the most arts friendly communities I have ever experienced and the level of talent and diversity for such a small area is Amazing! Each gallery and arts venue out here has it’s own voice which makes is especially fun to visit them all. I feel lucky to be a part of it and to be living in Gorgeous Hatty with my talented friends and neighbors! ~Kimmie 🙂

  17. I agree Kimmie….and that is why we at the Art Village are trying hard to create the Outer Banks Art Center on the old weeping radish site where all artists can come and have working artists studios, space for daily art shows and sales….concerts , and more….We just need the community to get behind the project so that we can have the next Torpedo Factory or the New Work House or a arts area like Asheville…that will draw customers all over …

  18. This is the best most exciting thing to ever come to the OBX !! As a huge fan of horror and especially zombie films I am so thrilled to have this event here!!

  19. This entire contest is worthless. The winner is not being decided by who the public actually sees as the best local band. It is being decided by who has the most time to sit at their computers and click on their own bands name a thousand times.

You know who you are, I hope you enjoy your false victory.

    • I 100% agree with you! If everyone got one vote, Zack Mexico would take this. Instead it will go to a band no one even knows about. Luckily, there is no question who the better local band is in this case. That’s already been proven ten-fold. “Best of the beach” has always been, and will continue to be, a total joke. And you all will still be amazing.

    • Please remember, “It is an honor just to be nominated”.

Seriously, we appreciate any constructive criticism and welcome your comments and suggestions, all of which will be considered in planning next year’s OBX Entertainment Awards; however, no changes will be made this year, as nominations were accepted and voting has been ongoing since June.

Also, we cannot allow further comments that are negative / insulting to any of our nominees, potential voters, or the OBX Entertainment Awards. Please keep the comments positive, or we will no longer approve them, as our goal is for this to be “fun” for everyone involved. We are not attempting to name the absolute best/most talented/most successful entertainers on the Outer Banks, but rather give a nod to our readers’ favorite picks in these first eight categories.

  20. My husband and I go to Studio 12 every time we visit the Outer Banks. It is one of my favorite things to do down there! The studio is a very family friendly and the atmosphere is relaxing. I also love how friendly and hand-on the owner of the shop is. I asked about classes before I left and the owner offered to show me some techniques the next time I come! I would recommend Studio 12 to anyone visiting OBX. Good luck Studio 12! Hope you win! You deserve it!!!!

  21. I’m not sure that I understand your balloting methods. When I last voted the Natural Arts Surf Shop was among the top three surf shops. I returned a few days later and found that Secret Spot had somehow retained their percentage and Natural Arts had lost its percentage. What is up with that?

  24. Hopscotch Highlight ( Zack Mexico ) …the first club show I’ve got to be at on Friday is definitely Zack Mexico. Based out of Kill Devil Hills, it’s always joyous to see a young band from eastern North Carolina make worthwhile music, as the scene out there is a strange land filled with beach music and christian rock, but alas Zack Mexico joins the ranks of the few that break that mold. At times they can sound like a psychedelic surf rock act, yet at others they can sound like an ambient punk band, they’re a versatile and talented quintet in their early 20’s with limitless potential. http://thebottomstring.blogspot.com/2012/08/hopscotch-highlight-on-zack-mexico.html

  25. Speakers In Code Hopscotch Review: Zack Mexico New Hopscotch venue, CAM Raleigh, is an odd but awesome space. Completely white, with nothing on the backing wall behind the stage, musicians probably feel pretty vulnerable, or on display somewhat. I’m not sure if this was on purpose or not, considering it’s an art museum, but it makes for an interesting experience when the band makes the most of it.

Enter Zack Mexico, a young quintet from the Outer Banks of NC, sporting some pretty fresh haircuts and what appeared to be Samoan tribal threads. Laying aside their lounging psychedelic guitars, they cleverly upped the energy, while keeping the warm baritone voice seems to echo throughout most of their recorded music. Music for the beach, or apparently a festival – they were one of the more impressive bands we saw all weekend. – Matt Smith

  26. interceder Frank Zappa ( Zack Mexico ) It would be silly to call Zack Mexico surf music from the moon — there’s no water up there, let alone oceans. But you wouldn’t have ocean tides without the moon’s gravitational pull. So think of this Kill Devil Hills quintet as inhabitants of the dark side of said orb, where they lasso the centripetal forces of the galaxy to ride waves of skronk across the astral plain. If that ain’t surfing, well, I don’t know what is.

Still, you want to talk weird and wonderful, it doesn’t get any better than the aforementioned Zack Mexico, a young quintet dressed in castoff beachwear that looked like it had been shoplifted from an Outer Banks thrift shop. They alternated between withering Captain Beefheart-esque flipouts, ambient drones and rippling jingle-jangle guitar-pop, with turn-on-a-dime transitions. The interplay between the group’s three guitarists (each equipped with a full rack of sound-effects pedals) was amazing, and the set ended with three out of five members writing around the floor as the bandleader flung his guitar in the air, trying to hook it on an overhead rafter as the crowd howled.

You really should be out seeing this stuff.. David Menconi http://interceder.net/latest_news/Frank-Zappa

  32. What does the Lost Colony have to do with St. Patricks Day, Spring or the beach? My opinion is that it should represent both St. Patricks and the beaches. Someone I know in the Parade didn’t know about the theme when they signed up and I doubt they were prepared for the theme and though the Lost Colony is a big part of Dare County it just doesn’t seem fitting for St Paddy’s Day….my opinion 🙁

Should we pour 5 quarts of water in to make sure our cooler doesn’t run over or what? Whose brillant idea was this! Virginia Beach, as well as Carolina Beach BMF’s both allow coolers, period. Manteo and Flem Whitt BMF’s never did allow coolers – which is fine too. We do to all sorts of outdoor activities each and every summer. We have yet to have a cooler measured! We’re still considering whether or not to come, because if you’re this anal about coolers, my guess is that there will be other issues as well.

If you don’t know what the Cat’s Meow Village is, they are small wooden blocks of lvarious andmarks, which are collectibles. You can generally buy them in some of the gift shops, although the one for Dowdy’s hasn’t been for sale for many, many years. My daughter has very fond memories of Dowdy’s, so I am trying to find it to give her as a gift. If anyone has one they would be willing to part with I would be happy to buy it from you.

  51. What Abrams’ version of Star Trek does so well in both films is to remind us that this universe is in fact not far, far away (or a long time ago), but rather right here in front of us. It’s our universe, complete with a futuristic vision of Earth that we can identify with far more than in the old CBS TV show that never ventured to the crew’s home planet, keeping them always off on new adventures on numerous uncharter planets “where no one has gone before”.

  61. Very well done/. The lead is a bit wooden–hope he’s not around for the sequel, but thats the only flaw I found. BTW, all the Godzilla films spend the first half of the movie on whatever creatures big G is gonna fight, so this movie’s approach is in keeping with the franchise and its tradition. Still, ADHD reviewers and fans want nothing but non stop mayhem, so they slam this film without understanding the context of the franchise’s history. Personally I loved it and am heading back for a second view.

If you stroll the whole Beach from Kitty Hawk to Nags Head the only trees you will se are Hollywood Juniper, Black Pine, and Myrcle bushes along with pampas grass and Russian Olive. The Water Oaks are native plants and a Live Oak is not the same. Live Oaks will not take the salt and wind that a Water Oak will. From experience I have planted Live Oaks, Holly and other deciduous trees and find the salt and wind will not let them thrive. Think again and put something there that will all of our local people can take advantage of other the than just the sports orientated and the young children, We have enough parks for that

Please let me know how and where we can purchase these as I am not able to do so from my tablet for some reason.

  74. Can you tell me when tickets will go on sale for the June 2nd or 3rd full moon climb? I’ll be on the OBX that week and would love to do this. I’ve been visiting nearly my entire life since I went with my parents but I’ve never been able to do this and would absolutely love to! I just wanted to know as I’ll be arriving Saturday morning on May 30th. If they go on sale that day, I want to make sure I’m at Bodie Island when the visitor center opens so I can purchase my ticket. Thank you!

  76. This was my second Memorial day Beach Music Festival with you guys!!! I didn’t think (at 55) I was capable of having that much fun in one day, but again the Shallowbag ‘Bug’ bit me! Great line-up of bands, fun loving people, and the most beautiful setting / venue, anywhere on the East Coast!!! Can’t wait for next year! We need “The Entertainers”, next year!!! Just a wish!!!

    • The fees probably vary depending on the event, but this was a submitted press release so we don’t have that information confirmed. You can call 252-216-9464 for additional details.

Had a similar pair by Nikon with the same looking blinders that saved my eyesight when the boat I was on blew up and sent a piece of debris from the engine right into the right lens back in 2008.

  79. So many musicians are troubled by your invitation (application) for musicians to play your festival. This has become the exact model musicians have been railing against for years. Perhaps your food providers could apply to provide free food for everyone, with a small deposit required. If the musicians are not good enough to pay, you’re saying to your patrons, “Here, we dug up some chumps who are not good enough to pay, but enjoy them. We’re giving them ‘exposure’. Look forward to swarming your festival.

Before we organize a group of musicians to protest your festival, to heckle any performers devaluing the craft by playing for free for an event you charge money to attend. (actually paying a deposit), we’d like to give you a chance to reconsider your musician compensation model. If your festival can not afford to hire musicians, it shouldn’t feature live music. This is not a defensible model. This usually happens when organizers who don’t value artists, get some great idea to have a contest, or get people to play for free for the thrill of it. Any artist who does that is not a friend to true musicians trying to make a living. You are now part of that problem.

    • First of all this is not our event. We’re not in charge of it, we don’t book it, we have absolutely no say in how it’s run. We published the same press release that was submitted to all local media outlets. If you had read the post a little more carefully before launching your attack you’d have seen that it is plainly stated that the Seafood Festival is presented by the Outer Banks Visitors Bureau. Take your complaint to them if you wish. Second, as professional musicians ourselves (my wife even has a Bachelor’s of Science degree in music performance) we have gladly played numerous times for free in exchange for exposure. What band do you represent? Are you local? How long have you been a professional musician? If you’re already successful enough to name your own price, why are you worried about this event? Third, if you’re going to organize a protest than at least know who/what you’re protesting before attacking the messenger in the future. To clarify, we (OBX Entertainment) are an entertainment news website. We report on upcoming events and go out and cover many of them. We are not in charge of these events (with the exception of our Outer Banks Halloween Parade, which is entirely presented by us). No one on the Outer Banks does more (for free!) to promote local events and artists than we do. Should we start damanding payment every time a band like yours submits a press release about one of their upcoming shows? We are not “part of that problem”. In fact we’re the greatest ally a band or artisits could have because we are one of the only places they can get “free” promotion of their events. Please read more carefully and do a tiny bit of research next time before attacking the wrong people. Thanks.

    • That’s the photo used in the source article. We know where it was taken, but you should let them know. Also, not sure if they are ranking the actual “Cape” itself or the Cape Hatteras National Seashore as a whole, in which case the photo would still apply. Thanks.

It was playing at our local Shopping Mall Theater just like in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Now I am excited to share the same experience with my kids who are 7 and 9.

Two Star Wars fans, Katrina and Lonna, were horrified to discover that the evil Galactic Empire had bought up all the tickets to opening night before they could get them. Unfortunately, they were too distracted by training their young padawans to buy the tickets.
With the fate of the rebellion at stake, they now fear there is no way they will be able to go on opening night.

I was Darth Vader and my fiance was luke. I got married in sept this year and has a star wars wedding. R2d2 cake and all. Walked to the imperial March. This past month we called it quits and now I’m trying to raise my almost 2 great old on my own With no job. Winning these tickets that I can’t afford otherwise would really bring a little cheer into my life which has been insanely hard to come by to be honest!

  92. My husband and I both grew up in the 70s and the first Star Wars movie was the first movie either of us saw in theaters. Since then, we have seen the new ones together, as well as having family movie nights to introduce our daughter to them. My husband has talked about nothing more than seeing the new movie as soon as it comes out for as long as they have talked about making it. I had intended for it to be his Christmas present, but due to some recent unemployment and a health emergency, I am not going to be able to do that for him. It would be an amazing Christmas gift to be able to provide this gift for him. He has given up so much to give our daughter everything she needs and he hardly ever does anything for himself. Thanks!!

We stayed at Seven Cs with family, paid for ocean front, got there 6/26/17 & were supposed to stay till 7/2/17 , we ended up leaving a day early because our beach access was closed, we drove 7 hrs to enjoy the beach & feel that we should of been informed, glad that your beaches are being improved but left with such disappointment in this how rents were left high & dry with no one seemingly caring about vacationers whose vacations where disrupted!! We are in our late 60’s & we don’t plan on returning to OBX after this bad experience!

    • We weren’t in charge of any of that. The sound quality was terrible for us sitting right in front of the panel and it was no better for those in the audience sitting in the back of the room. We could not understand most of the audio during the Q&A or the episode screening itself. But we presented it here as it happened. Please address your concerns to the premiere event organizers (NC Watermen United), so hopefully they can do better next year. Thanks for watching anyway!

  112. Will there be more research and more shows? I think this warrants archaeological research in Oconeechee Neck, NC and you have given enough proof for Jamestown ancestry groups to maybe sponsor such We never suspected that all that John Smith wrote was actually true and we never thought they ended upstream on the Roanoke River. There was much discussion in the 1960’s & 70’s that some native Americans had blue eyes because they had ancestry from the lost colonists. Some in the high plains area near Christie, Va. at HyCo lake north of Roxboro and I have met blue eyed Lumbee from Robeson County. A simple DNA test might be of interest. There is an active Mormon group in Pembroke. They do genealogy and would know how pure their ancestry is since that time.

  117. Matt, so sorry to read about Glenn. We met him and purchased a work of art in May, and that work hangs proudly in our sun room here in Portsmouth. He personalized it for us. The sad thing is I took many photos that afternoon of me, my husband Chuck and Glenn together with Pat — and a computer crash later in the summer depleted all my photos including those of Glenn. He truly was one of a kind. That room upstairs that Pat assembled for him was indeed another great work of art. As a former editor who like you carries many subjects I have interviewed and interacted through the years in my heart, this piece you have written on Glenn is a great testimony. Fortunately, I have both of his books which he personally autographed so I can share him with others. We were looking forward to visiting him in his studio this fall when we would be back in Nags Head for the off-season. Many thanks for writing from the heart. – Susan Kalan
