Outer Banks National Parks Drew More Than 3 Million Visits In 2016

The National Park Service has announced that its local parks within the Outer Banks Group recorded a total of 3,162,854 visits in 2016, which was celebrated as the Park Service’s centennial anniversary year since being founded in 1916.

“In 2016, all three national parks on the Outer Banks received increased visitation, including the largest yearly visitation total at Cape Hatteras National Seashore since 2003,” said Outer Banks Group Superintendent David Hallac.

Visitation Highlights at Cape Hatteras National Seashore on Hatteras Island:

  • 2,411,711 visits in 2016 compared to 2,274,635 visits in 2015

Visitation Highlights at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site on Roanoke Island:

  • 292,367 visits in 2016 compared to 289,885 visits in 2015

Visitation Highlights at Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills:

  • 458,776 visits in 2016 compared to 437,184 visits in 2015
