Weekend Movie Update – July 1, 2016: ‘Tarzan’ and Spielberg Face ‘The Purge’

The annual Purge has arrived in theaters this week, facing some Giant competition from Steven Spielberg and the legendary Tarzan, while Dory swims into The Pioneer.

From Disney and Pixar, the animated sequel Finding Dory (rated PG) continues at the Pioneer Theatre in Manteo, through July 7.

Showtime at The Pioneer is 8pm nightly.

The third film in The Purge series arrives, fittingly subtitled Election Year (rated R), opening Friday at RC Theatres in Kill Devil Hills, with two early preview screenings set for tonight (Thursday) at 7:30 and 10pm.

Obviously playing on some familiar themes that echo this year’s ongoing real and very surreal Presidential election, you can watch the killer trailer for the sequel in the player below!

Director Steven Spielberg teams up with Disney for the first time with the new family fantasy The BFG (rated PG), which tells the tale of a Big Friendly Giant and his young human friend, opening Friday at RC Theatres in Kill Devil Hills, with preview screenings tonight (Thursday) at 7:10 and 9:45pm.

The king of the jungle swings back into action in the new adventure The Legend of Trazan (rated PG13), starring True Blood‘s Alexander Skarsgard, The Avengers‘ Samuel L. Jackson, and Suicide Squad‘s Margot Robbie, opening Friday at RC Theatres in Kill Devil Hills, with preview screenings tonight (Thursday) at 6 and 9:50pm.
