Hundreds of artists and art enthusiasts gathered at the Dare County Arts Council Gallery in downtown Manteo on Sunday, May 1 for the opening of the 19th Mollie Fearing Memorial Art Show.

The annual show is held in memory of Mollie A. Fearing, one of the founders of the Dare County Arts Council. This year’s show featured an eclectic mix of artwork from over 80 entries.

“Zillie’s has been the Presenting Sponsor of the Mollie Fearing Memorial Art Show for the past two years. Mollie was a good friend and mentor and she welcomed everyone to her beloved Dare County with open arms. We’re so privileged to be able to memorialize Mollie’s intense love of the arts and honor our great friend Grizelle and her family through sponsorship of the show,” said co-owner of Zillie’s Island Pantry David Bundy.

Through blind judging and a points system based on skill, craftsmanship and content, Executive Director of Pocosin Arts Marlene True carefully selected the following award winners:

Best in Show: Mary Ann Remer (painting)

Excellence Awards: Ann Rubino (painting), Daniel Pullen (photography), Barbara Gernat (painting), Kathryn Osgood (jewelry) and Bruce Frazier (collagraph)

Honorable Mentions: Bob Turney (ink/watercolor), Kinga Rojek (painting), Joan Morgan (jewelry) and Michael Halminski (photography).

People’s Choice: There was a tie and two ribbons were awarded to Janet Stapelman (fiber) and Ann Rubino (painting)

Special Excellence Award presented by North Carolina Coastal Federation for a work of art most reflective on our coastal region: Bruce Frazier (collagraph)

“The annual Mollie Fearing show always brings out the best in our local artists, so I am honored and overwhelmed to be this year’s Best in Show winner. I was inspired by American astronaut Scott Kelly’s beautiful photos of the planet to create an abstract impression of Mother Earth,” said Best in Show winner Mary Ann Remer.

The show will be on exhibit at the DCAC Gallery through May 31.
