In keeping with the popular social media trend of #ThrowbackThursday, we are going to flashback to our own #OBX #TBT photo gallery from the OBX Entertainment archives!

Today, we are featuring the legendary David Allan Coe, photographed live on stage in concert at Kelly’s Outer Banks Restaurant and Tavern in Nags Head on February 24, 2012.

The original American outlaw David Allan Coe took the stage to rousing applause from a packed house at Kelly’s in Nags Head on Friday, Feb. 24th (2012), and proceded to tear through more than 90 minutes of the country legend’s best known hits.

Coe’s set was like a history lesson in the career of the “mysterious rhinestone cowboy,” including “Would You Lay with Me (In a Field of Stone)” (a 1974 hit written by Coe for Tanya Tucker), “Take This Job and Shove It” (a 1978 hit written by Coe and performed by Johnny Paycheck), and of course his signature song, “Long Haired Redneck.”

Backed by a stellar rythym section, and Coe’s own son Tyler on lead guitar, the band fearlessly dug into Willie Nelson’s “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die,” pairing it with a recent collaboration with the heavy metal band Pantera called “Cowboys Do More Dope (Than Rock and Rollers)” in a crowd pleasing medley, among more than two-dozen fan favorites performed almost non-stop.

When Coe said goodnight and walked off stage, his band jammed out into a dizzying fury of fuzz and distortion, as if to proudly remind those in attendance that “cowboys” do in fact kick ass just as much as “rock and rollers” – but then, those in attendance didn’t really need the reminder, as they roared in deafening approval.
