Outer Banks Pro 2013 Official Surf Forecast For Nags Head
The 2013 Wave Riding Vehicles Outer Banks Pro surfing contest returns to Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head this Labor Day Weekend, and we have your first official swell report for the weekend directly from the event’s Facebook page.

Brief Overview:
Small surf is expected to kick off the 2013 WRV Outer Banks Pro on Thursday. Local windswell and underlying SE/ESE background swell mix is due for Friday and over the weekend.
Swell/Surf Outlook:
A cold front will move into the region on Thursday. This will set up offshore winds and small SE/ESE background swell in around the knee high range on Thursday.
There is still a decent amount of uncertainty regarding the outlook for Friday, the weekend and into Labor Day. At this point, it looks like the frontal boundary that moves through the region on Thursday will stall out south of the region on Friday. The latest computer model guidance suggests we will see a wave of low pressure develop along this front. We have seen this general pattern a couple of times over the past few weeks and the computer models have generally done a rather poor job accurately depicting how much windswell this scenario produces.
In this case, I am expecting there to be small but short period NE/ENE wind chop in the water on Friday as this wave of low pressure takes shape. Expect 1-2′ (knee-thigh face height) NE/ENE wind chop and underlying ESE swell on Friday. Small 1-2′ (knee-thigh high) NE/ENE wind chop and underlying ESE swell mix continues on Saturday.
Potential exists for a bit more NE windswell and local wind chop mix for Sunday that fades into Monday. Again, this will be largely dependent on the location and strength of the wave of low pressure that looks to develop along the old frontal boundary. We will closely monitor the situation over the next several days and bring daily updates starting on Wednesday the 28th.
Wind/Weather Outlook:
An approaching frontal boundary will set up moderate offshore winds on Thursday. Potential exists for showers/thunderstorms on Thursday as the front moves into the region, especially during the second half of the day. Onshore NE/ENE winds are then expected for Friday and over the weekend with more favorable weather as the front settles south of the region.
We will need to monitor the front as it sags south of the region as some of the computer model guidance suggests we will see a wave of low pressure develop along the front on Friday/Saturday. If this verifies there is the potential for stronger onshore winds and scattered showers to impact the Outer Banks over the weekend and into Labor Day.
Professional surf competition is scheduled to start this Thursday, August 29, running through Labor Day Monday, September 2.
Presented by Hurley as part of the Western Atlantic Surf Series, this year’s contest returns to the south side of Jennette’s Pier at Whalebone Junction in Nags Head, with a total purse of $30,00 in prize money up for grabs.
