Weekend Movie Update – Aug. 16, 2013: ‘Kick-Ass’ ‘Jobs’

It’s another crowded weekend at theaters, with Ashton Kutcher bringing Jobs to life, as Oprah gives a nod to The Butler, and there’s plenty of Kick-Ass action and Paranoia to go around, while The Lone Ranger rides into The Pioneer.

Johnny Depp (Dark Shadows) is Tonto and Armie Hammer (The Social Network) is the titular hero in Disney’s The Lone Ranger (rated PG13), from the director of the original Pirates of the Caribbeanpremiering this Friday at the historic Pioneer Theatre in Manteo for a one week run.

In the film, Tonto recounts the origin of the mysterious Lone Ranger, as the legend (and possibly a new franchise) of this American icon begins.

 If you enjoyed the original Kick-Ass (2010), about a group of amateur superheroes who have no actual super powers, you have probably already purchased your ticket for the sequel Kick-Ass 2 (rated R), starting tomorrow (Thursday) with 8pm and 10pm preview screenings and opening Friday at R/C KDH Movies 10 in Kill Devil Hills.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Godzilla), Chloe Grace Moretz (Carrie), and Christopher Mintz-Plasse (Superbad) return from the first film and are joined by Jim Carrey (Dumb and Dumber) this time around for more extreme comedic violence.

Ashton Kutcher (That 70’s Show) brings the creator of the iPhone to life in the new drama Jobs (rated PG13), starting at 9:40pm Thursday and opening on Friday.

Also starring Dermot Mulroney (Young Guns), the film details the major moments and defining characters that influenced Steve Jobs on a daily basis from 1971 through  2001.

Lee Daniels’ The Butler (rated PG13) tells the true story of a White House butler who served eight American presidents over three decades, tracing the dramatic changes that swept the country during this time.

Rounding out this week’s new releases is the suspense thriller Paranoia (rated PG13), premiering Thursday at 10pm and opening on Friday at R/C KDH Movies 10, about a blue collar guy trying to get ahead in his entry level job until one costly and illegal mistake quickly gets him in over his head.
