It is perhaps the most quoted, covered, remade, rebooted, and re-imagined movie of all time, and this weekend is your chance to see it outside on the big screen and under the stars.
The Children at Play Museum presents Friday Night Movies on the Sound, outside on the lawn near the old Windmill Point property next to Pamlico Jack’s Restaurant in Nags Head, with a screening of the classic family favorite The Wizard of Oz (1939) set for this Friday, Sept. 7!
Starring Judy Garland in her career defining role, The Wizard of Oz tells the story of Dorothy’s (Garland) journey to the Land of Oz, and her adventures in trying to find her way back home to Kansas.
Based the 1900 L. Frank Baum novel of the same name, the film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture (it lost to Gone with the Wind) and Best Original Song for “Over the Rainbow” (it won).
The world will return to Oz yet again on March 8, 2013, when Disney’s all-star Oz The Great and Powerful opens in theaters.
You can watch a nostalgic teaser for the timeless fantasy epic in the player below, as well as the official theatrical trailer for the upcoming Disney prequel starring James Franco (Spider-Man) as the Wizard, Michelle Williams (Dawson’s Creek) as Glinda, and Mila Kunis (Black Swan) as the future Wicked Witch of the West!
Admission to the movie is free, and on-site parking is only $5 per vehicle.
Gates open at 7, and showtime is approximately 8pm, at sundown.
Families are encourged to bring chairs and/or blankets and enjoy the sunset over the sound just prior to this uniqe viewing opportunity.
