Wilksboro, NC native Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover, Due Date) returns to theaters this week with Will Ferrell (Elf, Anchorman), as two rival North Carolina poiticians in a heated and hilarious contest for a seat on the U.S. House of Representatives in The Campaign.
The cast for the timely political comedy from director Jay Roach (Meet the Parents, Austin Powers) also includes Dan Aykroyd (Ghostbusters), John Lithgow (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), Brian Cox (Manhunter), Jack McBrayer (NBC’s 30 Rock), Dylan McDermott (F/X’s American Horror Story), Sarah Baker (Sweet Home Alabama), and SNL‘s Jason Sudeikis (who is currently shooting We’re the Millers with Jennifer Aniston in Wilmington, NC).
When long-term congressman Cam Brady (Will Ferrell) commits a major public gaffe before an upcoming election, a pair of ultra-wealthy CEOs plot to put up a rival candidate and gain influence over their North Carolina district. Their man: naïve Marty Huggins (Zach Galifianakis), director of the local Tourism Center.
At first, Marty appears to be the unlikeliest possible choice but, with the help of his new benefactors’ support, a cutthroat campaign manager and his family’s political connections, he soon becomes a contender who gives the charismatic Cam plenty to worry about.
Galifiankis will soon be seen in You Are Here with Owen Wilson (Wedding Crashers) and Amy Poehler (NBC’s Parks and Recreation), which was filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina earlier this year.
Ferrell previously worked in North Carolina in the NASCAR comedy Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, filmed in Charlotte, Concord, and Rockingham in 2006.
