Posted By on March 7, 2012

Filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina, the action-packed Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, has already made more than $270 million world-wide since its initial release in February, and now the hit film is coming to Manteo’s historic Pioneer Theatre for a one-week run, while Disney goes to Mars and horror goes ‘real time’ in this week’s new releases.

Here’s your Outer Banks movie update for the weekend of March 9, 2012!

Journey 2: The Mysterious Island was filmed in North Carolina

The family-friendly adventure sequel is rated PG and stars Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson (The Scorpion King, Fast Five), Vanessa Hudgens (High School Musical, Sucker Punch), and Josh Hutcherson, who will next be seen in The Hunger Games, which was also filmed in North Carolina (see our special feature on The Hunger Games here).

New at KDH Movies 10 in Kill Devil Hills this week is Disney’s big budget adaptation of the classic Edgar Rice Burroughs sci-fi novel, John Carter (rated PG13), about a Civil War soldier who finds himself leading a revolution on the planet Mars. You can check out a trailer below!

The film reunites Taylor Kitsch (NBC’s Friday Night Lights) with Lynn Collins (HBO’s True Blood), who previously co-starred together in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

Also opening this week in Kill Devil Hills is the suspense thriller Silent House (rated R), starring Elizabeth Olsen (Mary Kate and Ashley’s younger sister).

The film is unique in that it promises to tell the 88-minute story in ‘real time’ –  meaning one single uninterrupted shot – resting the fate of the movie firmly on the shoulders of newcomer Olsen, currently on the cover of the Hollywood issue of Vanity Fair as one of the magazine’s Fresh Young Stars of 2012.

The trailer looks pretty intense, and critics are loving Olsen’s performance (Rolling Stone called her a ‘primo scream queen’). Watch a trailer in the player below and let us know what you think in the comments section!
